I visit Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Tokyo-3 for a rooftop performance of my guitar version of the anime’s opening theme song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis”, originally performed by Yoko Takahashi

Considering the depressing and dramatic theme of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the J-pop song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” certainly sticks out as a weird choice for an opening theme. Apparently, the anime’s creator Hideaki Anno wanted to use a more classical piece at first, which would have been more in line with the anime’s darker tone, but viewers were more used to this type of upbeat opening theme, so they went with it. It proved to be a very good choice and gave us one of the most iconic anime openings in history!
The opening theme song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” (残酷な天使のテーゼ Zankoku na tenshi no tēze) was originally composed by Hidetoshi Satō and performed by Yoko Takahashi for the classic 1995 mecha anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン Shinseiki Evangerion).
This “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” guitar cover version was arranged, produced and performed by Borna Matosic.
