To celebrate the start of Doctor Who season 11, I produced a guitar cover of the 13th Doctor’s theme music, composed by the show’s new composer Segun Akinola!
The first episode of series 11 Doctor Who, The Woman Who Fell to Earth, did not only give us a first real look at Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor (spoiler: she’s brilliant!), but we also got a brand new soundtrack and a few scenes where the shows new composer Segun Akinola established what’s very likely to become the Doctor’s new theme music! And what a tune it is!
I particularly enjoyed the version of the theme that plays while Jodie Whittaker’s character is crafting the 13th Doctor’s sonic screw driver. For this guitar cover, I rewatched that scene over and over and then reproduced the soundtrack cue from scratch as a mockup with virtual instruments, staying mostly faithful to Akinola’s original arrangement, except for giving the melody to the guitar, obviously.
As a fan of the Russell T Davies era Doctor Who, having endured the dark age of Moffat (sorry Steven!), the first episode of series 11 felt like the REAL Doctor, as he was portrayed by Eccleston and Tennant, is finally back. Matt Smith was someone else entirely, and Capaldi’s brilliance was sabotaged by poor scripts and horrible character writing. But rejoice, Chibnall’s new direction and Jodie Whittaker’s performance brought HIM back to life! The Doctor is back!
Incidentally (or is it?), Murray Gold’s Doctor themes for 11 and 12 were also a big departure from those he had made for 9 and 10, but new series composer Segun Akinola mirrors the Timelord’s return by building his theme for 13 out of the same musical DNA that the 9 and 10 themes shared. It’s like a subliminal message through music! Crazy, huh?
All this has my hopes up for what’s to come!
I recorded the guitar, which is a Jeff Loomis signature 7-string, directly to Cubase through my Fractal Audio Axe FX 2 preamp/fx processor. While recording, I used the Vibesware Guitar Resonator GR-1 (not shown in this video) for sustain and to sweeten the tone with feedback overtones. Click here to watch my review video and demo for more about the GR-1 Guitar Resonator.
I filmed the video on my Panasonic GH4 camera equipped with the Metabones Speedbooster and the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens.
This is a fan tribute. Doctor Who, the music and the TV footage in this video are owned by the BBC.
